What’s it all about?
The Arts & Music Leader Training Course is a unique opportunity for those with a background in Music and/or Arts to gain in depth knowledge, practical experience and a qualification in teaching for the life long learning sector. CM is one of the pioneers of the community music sector, working innovatively and successfully in the field for over 25 years. Throughout its history CM has been committed to the training and professional development of its music tutors as part of its goal for quality and equality of opportunity in making and learning about music. The Course is aimed at those who want to develop a career in community music and arts leadership and requires a certain level of application and commitment from students if they are to gain the qualification and get the most out of the programme. Successful completion of the course will equip students to plan and lead quality music workshops and lessons and to operate professionally within different educational contexts and community arts setting. Those who complete the course find work in different settings including schools, further education and adult colleges, community music/arts projects and a wide variety of organisations working cross the social, arts and charitable spectrum.
The courses
Learning and Teaching Theory
This course introduces some of the key ideas and principles that have influenced current educational thinking and practice - with a particular emphasis on how these relate to learning and teaching in the arts. Students will explore a number of different contexts and approaches to creative teaching and leading. Students will gain an understanding of the different ways people learn and will be able to construct and analyse their own teaching methods and practice – becoming ‘reflective practitioners’ who consistently develop and improve upon their own work. Areas to be covered will include: psychological perspectives on learning; learning styles and creative approaches to teaching; experiential learning; inclusion, equality and diversity; assessment for learning; working with groups; framing tasks for creativity; the impact of the learning context; current legislative requirements and codes of practice.
Learning and Teaching Practice (music based)
The aim of this course is to guide students through the theory and practise of writing teaching pieces based around rhythm, melody, harmony, group composition, improvisation and music technology. Students will participate in practical workshops led by experienced tutors who can demonstrate models of good practice as well as allowing students to develop, test, evaluate and refine their own ideas. Students will have the opportunity to lead teach their own unique workshop piece and receive feedback as well as give feedback to others. The course will also include seminars
on how to structure a variety of learning activities into a sequence of progressive
lessons focussed on specific learning outcomes.
Successful completion of both Learning & Teaching theory and practice courses leads to PTLLS City and Guilds 7303 teaching qualification for the life long learning sector
What’s the time commitment?
Each course runs for 12 weeks and you will be required to attend one three hour class each week. The classes are currently running on Tuesday evenings from 6 – 9pm.
The Learning and Teaching Practice course can only be taken if the Learning and Teaching Theory course has been completed first.
How will I learn and be assessed?
Students follow a varied programme of practical and theoretical tasks and are encouraged to apply and reflect on their learning through experience. Students taking the City and Guilds PTLLS Qualification will be assessed through a variety of different written tasks: including short written assignments addressing particular questions on an area teaching, learning journals, a 30 minute micro-teaching practice, and a six lesson scheme of work. CM has a study support tutor to help students with written work.
What career paths can I access once I have completed the training?
The programme equips people with the skills needed to work in a variety of educational and community settings and contexts. Some work in schools as a visiting teacher or workshop leader, some work in colleges, some work with existing community projects or create their own projects and activities in different areas such as access to arts, youthwork, pupil referral units, prisons, mental health charities and the NHS, after school/holiday clubs, organisations working with refugees/women’s groups/adults with learning difficulties. The opportunities for employment are varied, and students are given guidance on how to access these opportunities throughout the course.
What kind of certificate will I get at the end of each course?
Students will get a Certificate from CM accrediting their learning and completion of the course. Students taking both Theory & Practice courses and successfully completing all the assessments will also get the City and Guilds level 3/4 7303 award ‘Preparing to Teach in the Life Long Learning Sector’, the ‘threshold license to teach’ currently required for all teachers in Further and Adult Education.
What are the entry requirements?
This programme is designed to welcome people from all current music and arts backgrounds and does not require formal qualifications for entry. Previous practical experience is highly beneficial and a good standard of musicianship or production skills is essential if you choose to do the Teaching & Learning Practice course.
Are there any course fees?
Each course costs £250. This is equivalent to just over £20 per 3-hour session. Payment can be made in full at the start of the course or in monthly instalments negotiated with the course leader. Students will have to pay an additional £53.20 to gain the City and Guilds 7303: Preparing to Teach in the Life Long Learning Sector.
